Achieving safer healthcare and medication for all: The world unites for PSD2018

Patient Solidarity Day has come and gone and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results. Our goal this year was to elevate the momentum in the conversation on safe healthcare and we are excited to see patient safety continue to receive global prioritisation and look forward to progressing this conversation.

A massive thank you and congratulations to everyone who joined the campaign and helped spread the word on safe medication and healthcare for all.

Here’s a look at the activities that took place to mark the campaign.

IAPO members’ PSD2018 photo competition winner is…

We are pleased to announce that the overall winner of our Patient Solidarity Day 2018 photo competition is Uganda Alliance of Patients Organizations (UAPO). Congratulations UAPO!

The Ugandan community marks PSD2018

IAPO Members, Community Health and Information Network and the Uganda Alliance for Patients Organisation marked Patient Solidarity Day 2018 using a new approach that saw over 200 participants engaged in a set of activities to discuss safe medication and healthcare for all. They now share their experience with us.

Patient Safety Movement Foundation on a mission of getting to zero preventable deaths

Patient Safety Movement, a non-profit organization committed to eliminating the more than 4,800,000 preventable deaths that occur in hospitals across the world every year, joined us in marking PSD2018.

They encourage hospitals to implement Actionable Patient Safety Solutions that are demonstrating success in eliminating preventable deaths as well as by securing pledges from medical technology companies to share their data. Speaking to IAPO, they further share what they are doing to drive and support safe medication and healthcare for all.

The rising tide of falsified medicines – a major public health threat

The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacy (ASOP EU) is on a mission to create and promote an environment that enables patients to safely buy their medicines online in a space permitted by law. Mike Isles, Executive Director of ASOP EU, explores this further.

Checking the authenticity of medicines from home

The manufacture and distribution of fake medicines is an enormous and growing public health risk with an untold cost to lives. According to a report published by the World Health Organisation, one in ten medical products circulating in low- and middle-income countries are estimated to be either substandard or falsified, endangering the lives of millions. Thus, with the number of fake drugs in the market increasing rapidly, it is imperative that we exercise utmost caution while making a purchase.

IAPO member celebrated as a heart hero for World Heart Day

We would like to congratulate IAPO member Migdalia Denis, President and Founder of Pulmonary Hypertension Latin Society, who was celebrated as a heart hero for World Heart Day. Migdalia shares her story with us.

Cultivating trust in the healthcare system

The latest International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA) Code of Practice will come into effect on 1 January 2019 detailing how pharmaceutical industry goes about its activities. This is based on the belief that patients need to be able to trust in the interactions between pharma, healthcare professionals and medical representatives. Thomas Cueni, Director General of IFPMA and co-chair of the APEC Biopharmaceutical Working Group on Ethics, comments on the new changes and what they mean.

Thank you for a great year!

Thank you to everyone who took part in making 2018 an excellent year at IAPO. Our highlights include; IAPO's Global Patients Congress in May and our recent Patient Solidarity Day, where we focused on safe medication and healthcare for all.
